Prefold Cloth Nappies

Basic Nappy

Prefold Cloth Nappies

What is a Pre-Fold?

  • A two piece cloth nappy system (3 pieces if you are using a liner)
  • The pre-fold is the absorbent part and the wrap is the waterproof component.
  • Pre-folds generally have extra layers of fabric sewn into a panel down the middle of the nappy.
  • They are rectangular in shape and are generally made of cotton twill

Features:

Minimal folding - compared to a flat nappy.

Single Containment Layer - unless a fastener i.e. nappi nippa, pins are used.

2 - 3 Sizes of pre-fold and 3 - 5 sizes of cover - to go from birth to potty (Depending on Brand).

Fabrics:

Prefold Nappy - Cotton - Indian Cotton and Chinese Cotton

Waterproof Outer / Cover - PUL, Fleece or Wool.

Info:

Pre-folds are a basic cloth nappy without all the frills. They are quite similar to traditional cloth nappies but much easier to use. They are not as absorbent as some of the more expensive styles of cloth nappies because they are less technical but they provide a low budget option. They are generally fast drying and the cotton prefold can be quite durable.

Pros:

They are generally cheaper than other modern cloth nappy styles
They are thin cotton so they dry reasonably quickly
The nappy's are really durable so will last a couple of children
The cover can be re-used if it is clean when you change the nappy

Cons:

They can be bulky especially on a toddler
The cover provides a single leak barrier
They can be fiddly to get on an older moving child
They need to be changed more frequently than most other styles
You may need to use pins or nappi nippas to get them to work on a baby with tiny legs especially to contain newborn poop.

Tips:

A cover / wrap with a leg gusset provides the best fit with a prefold system.

Dont skimp when purchasing your covers. There is a reason why some covers are $10 and others are $30. A $10 cover will give you $10 worth of sleep and use and a $30 cover will give you $30 worth of sleep and usage.

You get what you pay for.

Note: If the waterproof outer is clean when you change the nappy you can keep re-using it over and over again by just putting in a clean Prefold nappy
